European Ethnography at iCES

FiLo workshop, iCES, Regent's College
18th September 2009 10am-4pm

The first 'Fieldwork in London Network' workshop is being hosted by the Institute of Contemporary European Studies (iCES), at Regent's College. This event is supported by the iCES group on European Ethnographic Research, The University of Sussex, and CDEC.

The FiLo Network

FiLo is a researcher run and inspired network, that aims to bring together researchers who have chosen London as their field site. Some of their interests are on migration, transnationalism, ethno-political studies, deportation, dance, cultural politics, and cosmopolitanism. The network is open to anyone undertaking fieldwork research in London.

The Event

The event will have two distinguished keynote speakers, a discussion and poster presentations on the network's theme and aims: Fieldwork in London. It will take place in iCES Tuke 301, Regent's College, followed by refreshments, lunch and a guided walking tour of London.

Keynote Speakers

Professor John EadeProfessor John Eade
Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at Roehampton University and Executive Director of CRONEM (Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism). Selected work: 1997 Living the GLobal City: GLobalisation as Social Process, 2000 Placing London, 2005 Global Ethics and Civil Society, 2007 Reframing Piligrimage, 2008 Transnational Ties, 2009 Accesion and Migration: Changing Policy, Society and Culture in an Enlarged Europe.


Professor Daniel MillerProfessor Daniel Miller
Daniel Miller is Professor of Anthropology at UCL. He has published on the theme of material culture and consumption. Selected work: 1994 Modernity, An Ethnographic Approach, 1997 Capitalism: An Ethnographic Approach, 1998 A theory of Shopping, 2000 The Internet, 2001 Car Cultures, 2005 Materiality,  2007 The Comfort of Things.

Discussion and Poster Presentations:

One purpose of the workshop is to brainstorm about the purpose, use and direction of the network followed by a series of poster presentations and discussions. Poster presentations are an informal way to present the memeber's research and find out about each other's work. Attendance at the workshop is free, but you must register in advance, ideally before the end of July. Register please contact the FiLo e-mail address: filo.network@googlemail.com and tell us if:

  • You are a member/or not of FiLo and you would like to attend and/or present a poster.

After the event:

Tea/Coffee and lunch will be provided at iCES, Regent's College. There will be an invitation to the Knapp Gallery at Regent's College on the theme of 'London Life'. There will be a guided walking tour of central London for all participants after the workshop.
