Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship

Antonio TajaniWe were delighted to welcome Commissioner Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship to the College in March to speak and debate on the subject of New Sources of Growth in Europe with a lively audience of 100+ of current students; alumni; academics and invited external guests.  At a time of global and economic crisis, this subject could not be more relevant.

Culture of Innovation

The Commissioner, shared his vision to develop a new culture of entrepreneurship and innovation in Europe, creating an environment where citizens aren't afraid of trying out new business ventures.  He spoke of his aim to ensure that all the EU's business sectors will come out of the current economic crisis stronger and more competitive than before, able to support sustainable growth in a strong social market economy.

He spoke about his wish to take a fresh look at European industrial policy to make the sector more competitive on the global stage and to put the framework in place to enable industries, large and small, to be dynamic, sustainable and innovative in addressing the economic and environmental needs of the 21st Century. This means putting the 'green economy' at the heart of any new industrial policy so that Europe can become the world leader in eco-efficiency, eco-design and eco-technology.

Role of SMEs

Commissioner Tajani also discussed how SMEs need to develop their potential, particularly in the field of export growth and ensure they have access to finance and be encouraged by the effective implementation of the Small Business Act and the consolidation of the European Single Market.  He shared how he will lay special emphasis on the potential of the tourism sector, already one of Europe's most important economic activities.

Commissioner Tajani as an MEP was Head of the Forza Italia delegation in the European Parliament from 1999- 2008. He is also former Italian air force officer and distinguished journalist and radio presenter.
