iCES Internsip 2008
Konstantin Wurlf comments on his iCES Internship

My name is Konstantin Wurfl and I am a German
student of Business and Cultural Studies at the University of
Passau. From July until the end of September 2008 I had the
opportunity to work as an intern for iCES, the newly founded
Institute of Contemporary European Studies at EBS London.
Overwhelmed by the surrounding of Regent’s
Park and well aware of the School’s excellent reputation, I arrived
at EBSL on my first official working day. I introduced myself to
Professor Michael Scriven, the Director of iCES, who was
responsible for me during the whole period of the internship. He
took the time to show me around and introduced me to all key staff
at EBSL and Regent’s College. I could immediately see the
international orientation of the place when I talked to the members
of staff. All of them were open minded, helpful and visibly enjoyed
working with different nationalities.
I was given my own desk close to the office of
Professor Scriven and a working schedule defining several of my
tasks for the next months. After some days of orientation, I
started my work with a desk top research on European academic,
business and professional organizations that might be of interest
for future cooperation or for the future development of iCES.
Additionally, I was involved in the development of the institute’s
web site where I assisted Dr. Ibrahim Sirkeci and Dr. Angels Trias
i Valls. Other key projects were: sponsorship liaison with European
companies, marketing analysis, administrative support for iCES
guest lectures and major lectures, committee minute taking and
communication with key iCES/EBSL external stakeholders.
I experienced the working atmosphere within
iCES as both extraordinarily friendly and highly professional at
the same time. All staff members are academic elite and can call on
many years of experience in their respective area of expertise. The
fact that every member of iCES is specialized in a different field
of research creates diversity and allows iCES to approach most
issues of contemporary Europe from several different perspectives.
Becoming a member of this team for three months gave me the
possibility to get a close insight into the way the institute is
operating and allowed me to gather work experience through various
different projects. Additionally, I could also bring in some of my
own ideas. The way in which I was integrated within the
Institute by the staff under the leadership of Professor Michael
Scriven was extremely motivating and I can highly recommend iCES to
every student who wants to do an internship.
