Professor Michael Scriven Awarded Є25,000 European Commission Grant 

European Commission Representation in the UK Grant awarded to iCES Director

Professor Michael Scriven has recently been awarded 25,000 euros by the European Commission Representation in the UK to develop the work of the Institute of Contemporary European Studies (iCES).

" The award of this substantial grant by the European Commission is clear evidence of the quality of the work in contemporary European Studies being undertaken by the Institute’, noted Professor Scriven, Director of iCES.
Recognition of the work of iCES is extremely gratifying ".

Now in its second year of operation, iCES will organise its 2009-2010 activities around two key themes: (i) Sustaining Growth and Employment (ii) Climate Change and Sustainability.  The European Commission Grant will be specifically targeted at supporting the two major annual iCES lectures, the Europe in the World Lecture and the Jean Monnet Memorial Lecture.  These two lectures will be focused on the twin themes of employment and climate change and will be co-branded as iCES-European Commission events.

Urgent need for greater public understanding of European issues

At a time when there is urgent need for greater public understanding, particularly within the UK, of the key issues at stake within Europe, the award of the European Commission grant to iCES will be especially useful.  It will enable the Institute to maximise the impact of its major lectures on Europe through enhanced publicity of the events themselves and through extensive dissemination of published outputs in both printed and electronic form.

" The mission of iCES is to engage actively in the debate on Europe’, explained Professor Scriven. `In the present context of a global financial downturn Europe must inevitably confront difficult choices in the spheres of employment and climate change.  The iCES-European Commission lectures will be an important contribution to fostering a more informed and rational discussion in both of these key areas ".

iCES and the Commission's Work

The European Commission Representation in the UK, located in London, communicates EU policies and activities to people in the UK, listens to them and provides the Commission with in-depth, accurate and timely information regarding the views of Government, civil society and individual citizens on issues within the Commission’s remit.

The work of iCES in making the European agenda more visible will undoubtedly be given a significant boost through the award of the European Commission Representation in the UK grant.
