The Year Ahead: iCES 2009-2010

Picture of Michael Scriven and iCESThe Institute of Contemporary European Studies (iCES) has organised an exciting programme of lectures and seminars for the 2009-2010 academic year.  Linked closely with the European Business School London, iCES has decided to focus on the themes of job creation, sustainability and climate change in Europe over the coming year.

The iCES Executive team comprising Professor Michael Scriven (Director of iCES and Director of EBSL), Professor John Drew (Jean Monnet Professor of European Business and Management) and Dr Àngels Trias i Valls (Senior Research Assistant), have decided to consolidate activities within key thematic areas to create greater academic coherence and to maximise publication outputs.

Job Creation, Sustainability and Climate Change

13 October 2009
Wolfgang Munchau (Associate Editor Financial Times, Director of Eurointelligence and iCES Distinguished Visiting Fellow) will give a lecture on the `Future Long Term Economic Prospects for the EU’ at 7 pm in Darwin 204-205.

24 November 2009
the iCES Europe in the World Lecture will be held at 6-30 pm in Tuke Hall. The theme will be `Sustaining Growth and Jobs in Europe’.  The keynote speakers will be John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), John Cridland, Deputy Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry.

December 2009
an iCES Distinguished Visiting Fellow will give a lecture on an aspect of European business and employment.

January 2010
the European Government Business Relations Council will hold its annual meeting in the iCES seminar room, Tuke 301, on the theme of `Economic Growth and Employment in Europe at a Time of Crisis’.

April 2010
the theme of the annual iCES Jean Monnet Memorial Lecture will be `Energy and Climate Change post Copenhagen’.  A panel of experts will evaluate progress made on global environmental issues in the aftermath of the Copenhagen conference on climate change.

May 2010
In addition to these major lectures other iCES events are being planned: a seminar on European privatisation in which the issues of jobs and employment will be addressed, and a further lecture by Wolfgang Munchau on the `Financial Situation of the Eurozone’.

Politics and Culture in Europe

In parallel with these events on jobs, sustainability and climate change, iCES will also be organising other seminars and workshops:

18 September 2009
iCES will host a European Anthropology - Fieldwork in London Workshop with the Filo Network.  Keynote speakers will be Professor Daniel Miller (UCL) and Professor John Eeade (Roehampton University).

27 October 2009
to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, iCES has arranged in collaboration with the Senior Experts group a seminar entitled `20 Years On: The EU after the Fall of the Berlin Wall’.  Several of the Senior Experts will be speaking at this event which is to be held in the Knapp Gallery.

18 February 2009
iCES will organise a day conference on 'Sub-State Nationalisms in Europe' organised by Dr Alan Sandry and Dr Àngels Trias i Valls, the proceedings will be published on an edited volume on this theme.

Debate and Dialogue

The aim of iCES is to stimulate debate and dialogue on contemporary Europe and to develop proactively links with other European Business Schools in the EBSI (European Business Schools International) network.  All Regent’s college staff and students are welcome to attend the lectures, seminars and workshops organised by iCES during 2009-2010.
