Choosing your SPA destination

Researching an exchange destination takes time and effort. Unfortunately it is not as easy as spinning a world globe and pointing your finger. We encourage you to invest your energy into carefully considering the academic offerings, the location of the campus and the country you will be studying in.

This includes, using all the following resources to research your proposed exchange destination:

  • Consult information about the country, city and university
  • IPO (staff, information folders, books, maps, etc.)
  • Exchange students at EBS
  • EBS students who are or have been abroadThe Great Wall of China

Keep an open mind and be flexible regarding your Study Period Abroad (SPA) destination. Make the best choices for you.

What may be good for your friend might not necessarily be what is best for you. However, we do recommend you include your parents in the selection process.

Think of what your objectives are; what are your academic and career goals? Although your academic objectives should be the main factor when selecting your preferences, you should also consider the cultural experience outside the classroom.

Usually, those students who choose the most challenging destinations receive the most rewards from their SPA. So try to think outside the box.

It is also important to consider the cost of living and the current exchange rate in your host country. For example, the cost of living in Mexico varies significantly from Iceland.

Remember, you might not get your first choice, so make a good second and third choice.

"I’m really glad that I did a semester in New York - I learnt so much from the people, the city, and the university. My expectation of living in the USA and discovering a new culture was met, and I expect to go back there after my studies."
