| Course Aims | The learning of languages and understanding of other cultures complement the study of international business throughout the BAIB programme. It provides students with a business education embedded in a multilingual and multicultural context. Thus, Language for Business modules equip students with language competence and lead them to an in-depth understanding of different societies from a social, political, economic and cultural perspective.
Pre-SPA Language for Business modules provide the necessary foundation in linguistic, social, business and cultural aspects of the target language (TL) in preparation for the study, work and life experience in TL countries during the SPA.
The post-SPA Language for Business modules, on the other hand, consolidate and develop students' communicative competence and topic-based knowledge further. |
| Course Content | The module content has been designed to equip students with the essential linguistic skills and cultural competence required to attend university and live in the country where the target language is spoken.
The syllabus a) draws on the skills and knowledge acquired by students in Lang 2; b) provides lexical foundation in more specific areas and c) covers aspects of business in the target language such as marketing, human resources and economics.
The social, economic, political and business environment:
- economic sectors and leading companies
- national economic policy
- political and economic integration processes, globalisation, etc
- aspects of marketing & advertising, management
- money matters: accounts, banks, investment
Cultural differences:
- living and studying abroad
Current affairs:
- issues as they arise to develop general knowledge/to prepare for the SPA

Core Skills Content
The teaching and learning strategy will help to develop further the following skills:
- comprehension of the target language (in oral and written form) from a variety of registers and modes of delivery
- production (oral and written) of contextually appropriate target language in general, social, academic, and professional situations
- ability to adapt to linguistically and socially diverse communicative contexts
- cultural awareness: openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people, cultures and business

| Presentation | The teaching/learning strategy for language study at EBS has been designed to ensure that the learning outcomes for each module have been acquired. In pre-SPA modules (1 to 6), the TLS seeks to address students' needs in preparation for their Study Period Abroad, and after SPA (module 7), it draws upon students' experience and knowledge gained through their SPA.
Students learn by speaking, listening, reading and writing; they are directed and encouraged to do so through engagement with authentic target language sources from a variety of media; modes of engagement include role-play, presentation of own work, group discussion, debates, case studies, simulations and independent research. In addition, self-directed learning is an integral part of all module programmes. Work done in self-managed time is part of the module assessment.
Teaching draws upon a variety of teaching methods and is task-oriented. It encourages students to become independent learners through the provision of stimulating materials and tasks. Methods include: group and individual teaching; tutor-student interaction; skill-based, discussion-based and knowledge-based classes; communication via IT, and by means of specially designed learning materials. |
