iCES Collaboration with the Senior Experts Group
An exciting new collaborative venture
between the Institute of Contemporary European Studies (iCES) and
the Senior Experts group was recently finalised by Sir Michael
Butler, Chairman of the Senior Experts Group, and Professor Michael
Scriven, Director of iCES.
The agreement which is set to commence on 1
June 2009 will facilitate collaborative work between iCES and the
Senior Experts on all aspects of contemporary European
affairs. The present activities of iCES will accordingly be
significantly enhanced through close cooperation with the Senior
Experts group in a variety of projects ranging from conferences,
seminars, colloquia and publications focused on Europe.

The Senior Experts group consists mainly of
former high-ranking British public servants. It includes
several former UK ambassadors to the EU and all its members have
worked for or with the EU institutions. An independent group,
it makes its Briefing Notes available to the European Movement, the
All-Party EU Parliamentary Group and to others interested in
European Affairs.
Under the chairmanship of Sir Michael Butler
and the coordinating support of Mr. Nick Kent, the Senior Experts
group regularly produces draft position papers on contemporary
European issues drawing on the extensive knowledge and experience
of its members. Recent publications include: The EU and
the Global Financial Crisis, The EU: The First Fifty
Years, The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights,
Europe and Globalisation, Is Europe a Superstate
?, Sovereignty and the EU, The Future Enlargement
of the EU and The Lisbon Agenda for Economic
Reform.

This initiative which has the full support of
the CEO and Principal of Regent’s College, Professor Aldwyn Cooper,
opens up the possibility of Senior Expert involvement not only in
iCES major annual events such as the Jean Monnet Memorial Lecture
and the Europe in the World Lecture, but also Senior Expert
participation in the iCES Annual European Colloquium and Senior
Expert publication in the iCES Annual Review,
Contemporary Europe, and in the iCES Occasional
Paper series.
Active cooperation with the Senior Experts
group will underpin the overarching purpose of iCES which is to
engage fully in the debate on the construction of Europe in the
21st century and to aim in the process to raise the
profile of contemporary Europe and contemporary European
studies.
