- WorkloadYou must register for 4 business courses per semester, chosen from a list of courses approved by EBS London. You may replace one business course with a Portuguese language course. The course list is available from the IPO. The language of instruction and examination for all the courses must be Portuguese.
Pre Semester Intensive Portuguese Course
The IEPM Intensive Language Course lasts for two weeks and consists of an intensive language course, information seminars and some leisure activities. The Portuguese language course takes place during the morning, three 3 hours a day.
Prior to the beginning of the course you get an assessment test by Email, so that your level of Portuguese can be evaluated. The programme leaves enough time for leisure activities: excursions to interesting towns in the area, exhibitions and more.

An Advanced Portuguese Course is offered in the second semester.

There will be an exam at the end of each semester and students who successfully pass it are awarded a certificate. Application and further information at the International Relations Office.
- Pass RequirementsIn order to pass a course you need to gain a mark of 10 or above. To pass the semester you have to pass 2 out of 4 courses. Please note that you must take all 4 exams!
Please make sure that you fax us your Learning Agreement before your timetable is finalised at your host institution. If there is any problem with your courses, you will then have time to change them.
Grading system
Find out more about the grading system on the ISCTE Business School website.
- ApplicationFill out the application form and bring it to the IPO with:
- Letter of enrolment at EBS London
- Proof of valid health insurance
- Transcript (available from CSPA)
- Visa RequirmentsTo enter Portuguese territory, all students must be bearers of a travel document i.e. a valid passport. European Union and EEA (European Economic Area) citizens may present their national ID card. They have the right to move to another Member State to live, study and work, but should apply for a residence permit within 90 days of entry into Portugal to the Department of Immigration and Border Control. Evidence will have to be given of enrolment in a recognised school or college, as well as proof of health insurance coverage and sufficient financial resources.
Nationals of non-EU or non-EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) must apply for a Study Visa, which is a special permit designed for foreign students coming to Portugal – unless the country has a special agreement with Portugal to provide exemption from visas. The study visa can be obtained from the Portuguese diplomatic representative of your country (i.e. the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate). This visa may be granted on a multiple entry basis and is valid for a maximum period of one year.

- LifestyleInformation
The Erasmus association website has many information and tips about life in Lisbon, such as opening a bank account, health, culture, entertainement, etc.
Cost Of Living
Living expenses will depend mainly on the type of accommodation and where meals are taken. Other expenses are likely to involve travel, hobbies and leisure activities, clothes, medical care, books and other personal needs.
To give you an idea of the amount of money necessary to live as a student in Lisbon, see the 1-month budget below and examples of prices. The amount proposed will only cover modest spending but still ensures a proper standard of living during your stay.
Standard Student Budget (Approximation):
Housing - € 225
Food - € 150
Transport - € 20
Personal Expenses - € 75
Total - €470
Sports Facilities
Within a walking distance from ISCTE you will find the Academic Stadium of Lisbon (CDUL), comprehending a variety of sports facilities like swimming pools, team games courts, fitness centres, tennis courts, etc.
- AccomodationThe International Office tries to do its best providing all the necessary orientation and information for all incoming students.
Accommodation in Halls of Residence is extremely scarce and only 1% of foreign students manage to get a place there. To overcome this problem, renting a room in an apartment, shared with other students looking for an extra flat mate to share bills, is the best solution and a less expensive option.
Remember that finding lodgings in Lisbon can be difficult, especially if you are staying for less than a year. While seeking for permanent accommodation the best option for first nights is to stay at a Youth Hostel. Make sure you have a reservation.
Private Housing
A student coming to ISCTE must look for a room in the private market. This takes the form of an individual room, often furnished and rented by the landlord. Students share the kitchen and the bathroom.
When you reach the campus you will find, as in most universities, boards plastered with notices for flat shares and room lets. Rented accommodation is usually advertised in daily newspapers (the best for this research are “Correio da Manhã”, “Diário de Notícias” and “Ocasião”, which is published each Thursday), the students’ association of each faculty in the University Campus, as well as in youth information services of the Portuguese Institute of Youth (address: Avenida da Liberdade, no. 194, underground “Avenida”).
Two months rent is usually required in advance (one month’s rent in advance and a deposit fee, which is equivalent to one month’s rent).
